Question: Officer questions

Existing Middle School PTO left for High School MIddle School so current PTO was non existent. Position were advertised at school and no one came forward to run for 3 months. As the school year ended we had new parents come forward to claim positions and conduct PTO business with outgping boards blessing and Principal's blessing to keep PTO alive as year starts. They have done a ton of work. My question do we need to have a vote on them or can they be appointed. The PTO had no bylaws only policies and procedures with nothing mentioned about election of officers. Can I add to our currenlty new bylaws if there is but one candidate exective board can appoint to avoid dissolution.I really don't expect any parent objections to these officers, and no one has still come forward and we need to do business. Keep in mind no Bylaws and nothing written about voting. Thank you.

Be sure to get some bylaws written though and you may want to include issues such as a quorum, board seats, voting rules etc. When I re-wrote ours I made it clear that active members of the PTO can vote. A majority vote is needed to pass anything. A quorum is the number of people who are in attendance at any one meeting and that board seats can meet as needed and make decisions regarding the PTO in the event of emergency decisions needing to be made. If you google or swag search PTO ByLaws several schools will come up- check them out- you'll learn a lot about how other PTO's are functioning. Best of luck !!
