Question: PTO Memberships

As a board member when we ask families to become members what are incentives for them by becoming members every year? How does PTO know they are members?

We recommend that you make every parent or guardian with a child in the school automatically a member of the PTO. Many groups charge dues, but that creates a mixed message for parents -- you're asking them to participate and volunteer on one hand, but you're asking them to pay for the privilege of doing so. By declaring every parent a member of the PTO, you can legitimately take a "we're all in this together" tone in your communications.
