Question: particular fundraiser

I'm trying to hold a silent auction fundraiser to fund scholarships. My PTSA and principal are against it. Could I start a PTO without approval from the principal and function alongside the PTSA to hold this fundraiser for these particular funds? Under the umbrella of the PTSA is not possible because they are against it. I believe they are against it because they don't want too much of the community's money going to our school.

Our by-laws for our PTO specifically state that you must have a child in that school either entering the school the following year or presently in school. Your by-laws should have something under membership that address this.

If the PTSA is against it, I wouldn't recommend doing it. You're better off finding a different fundraiser that everyone can agree on and support. You should definitely speak with the PTSA president and the principal to find out exactly what their concerns are. Is the issue that they don't want to do a separate fundraiser for the scholarship? That they think a silent auction is too much work? etc. Once you know for sure what the reasoning is, you can look for an alternative that works for all parties.
