Question: Scholarship

We have a person who would like to donate annually for a scholarship to a 2nd grade student. They would like this student to use this scholarship for college in the future. They would like to PTO to handle applications and approvals for the scholarship. Can this be done and how would we start?

Yes, you can award a scholarship. Discuss with the donor what the basis for choosing the winner will be. Will it simply be a promising second grade student? Will economics come into play? etc. We recommend that you enlist two or three teachers and/or administrators to choose the winner. That prevents any conflict of interest if, for example, a child of a board member were to be considered.
