Question: PTA Membership

Our PTA currently asks our families to pay $5.00 to become a member of our PTA. I am wondering if other PTA's ask this or if everyone is automatically a member. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!

As a PTA, you are required to send dues to National, and probably also to your state. So, even if you decide not to collect dues, you are still going to have to come up with a way to pay those fees. So if you decide that every parent in your school is a member, that could add up to a lot of money to have to fork over to the higher PTA levels. I don't know if you'll find any PTAs who don't charge dues, because of this very issue.
