Question: waiting for 501(c)3 status

We filed for our 501(c)3 status in August 2012. The IRS promptly cashed our check, but that is all that has happened. We haven't received any notification of anything so far. I called the IRS in January of 2013 to inquire about the status of our application and the IRS said that they were currently reviewing applications that they received in March of 2012. I just called today (January 2014) and they said they were currently reviewing applications from May of 2012! They said that we can continue to solicit donations and have fundraisers while we wait. We just have to put in writing that our application is pending and that your donation may not be deductible. My question is - do you have any advice on how to expedite the application? Who should I call for help - a lawyer? and accountant? Thanks! Cari

It wouldn't hurt to talk to an attorney who works with nonprofits. We have heard that the IRS has gotten way behind on processing applications, but your situation does seem extreme. In general, there's nothing to do but wait, but it would be nice to at least know that your application hasn't gotten lost in the shuffle. I'd appreciate it, if you do pursue it, if you'd let us know how this turns out. I think there are a lot of groups that are wondering about their application and would like to hear what happens.
