Question: Tax Id Number

Okay, lots of questions coming your way! We are a very small PTO. We will probably not bring in more than $5000. We are trying to get started and are struggling a little. We need a EIN and Tax ID number. Can you tell me how much those things cost? We don't have much money right now. We only have $200. From what I can tell we have to pay $400 to file those forms. What should a small PTO do? If you have any help for me that would be AWESOME!!!

An EIN=tax ID number; those are not two separate things. And it doesn't cost you anything to get a tax ID number. You can file form SS-4 online at no charge.

The startup kit thing I read on this website said you have to file for the EIN and then file for the TAX ID number?!? So is that wrong? It also says you should go to www.ein.gov.us to do the EIN and it says we need to fill out the 1023EZ form for Tax ID number?!? I am so confused!!!!!

Doesn't sound right, and I can't find it anywhere--where did you see it? The article at http://www.ptotoday.com/pto-today-articles/article/837-how-to-start-a-pto does have the correct explanation. Also, the website you have listed above looks bogus.

You can't file a 1023EZ without already having your EIN. And, if you look at page 1 of the directions for the 1023EZ, under "Purpose of Form," you will see that you don't even need to file it if you expect to bring in
