Question: HELP

I have signed on as President pto. Our exec pto disbanded. We've been on the school's id # for 3 years. I was told by exec president that they have NEVER filed a tax form. I am scared to know what or fines could be and how to start over! Has anyone ever dealt with this?

Hi there,
It sounds like you have the opportunity now to go through the process of applying for non profit status from the IRS for your group. If your group has been an arm of the school -- using the school's tax ID # -- then it technically doesn't exist as a an independent group. So, in effect, you would be starting from scratch.

It sounds like the old PTO was acting as a dependent PTO. You will not have any problems as the schools handles all the financial responsibility. My PTO acts as a dependent, we have no problems working this way. We have great relationships with Principle and admin. We choice to not take on the responsibility and stay under the schools tax id. You have to decide which is best for you. Both dependent and Independent have their pros and cons.
