We recieved a survey from school this weekend and they are wanting feedback about starting school August 19th this fall! Not sure of the reasoning yet (the board kept their meeting really short tonight) but do want to ask as the topic rolled over into PTO business.
When do you all start?? Isn't that a little early or is it just me? :confused:

we start the week before labor day which is usually the last week in august.

We start August 14th. Too Early.

We started August 7 this year but we also get out before Memorial Day.

Here in upstate NY, school starts the first wednesday after labor day but doesn't end until mid to late June(depending on snow days used). Its nice though, because June is still very spring like up here. July and August are our hot summer months. We don't go on vacation until the last 2 weeks of august, i would hate for the kids to have to go back to school then...too hot!!

We start about the second week of August and get out the 3rd week of May. We're in Texas, so there are some complaints that it would be better to wait a couple weeks since August is so hot. (High A/C bills, sunstroke issues, older schools that might not be air conditioned, etc.)

The flip side (for here) is the argument that they need to end the first semester before the Christmas break so that the schools can stay pretty much on the same schedule as the colleges. To do THAT, they must start in August. Thus H.S. seniors graduating mid-year are in sync for starting college in January and High school seniors graduating in May (who want) can go right into the college summer school schedule. Another argument is that it's not as effective and the kids don't retain as much when the Christmas break comes before the end of the semester. They feel it's a cleaner break to have the semesters divided by winter break. There are other pros/cons, but that's the ones that comes to mind.
