A new school building

4 Years, 5 Months ago

Page: 1

Our middle school building is being replaced in the next two years. The new one will be built in a new location, closer to a high school with room for another elementary school on the same new property. The old building is to be renovated to provide more space for PreSchool and Kindergarten,

I've recently seen the architectural drawings.

Does anyone have any ideas about how moving into a new building might affect a PTO?

It depends on the population of the new school. Our school moved across the street 3 yrs ago. Our school population picked up and moved, but we also had about 1/3 of the population of another school join us and scattered others all due to the redistricting. It affected our PTO in the fact that the parents of the other school that joined us wanted us to change everything so we were just like their old school. It has been an ongoing issue ever since.

Although we've had 2 board since we opened and each board has stated that our school has had its own traditions and would like to retain those traditions, the joining parents keep bringing it up. They just can't accept that they are at another school and we do things differently here. Each board has tried to incorporate some ideas of theirs in. However, each one has failed. Although events & activities worked at their old school, they are not working here. Parents are different at each school. The number of volunteers are different; the level of participation, creativity and amount of time they have to give. But they don't see that. So year after year, they try something from the old school & year after year it fails. the funniest part is the parents that are bring up all these ideas aren't running or volunteering to be a part of any of it, but they are the ones insisting they we do it. After 3 years, I think the new board will not be as gratious.

I have not heard of any redristricting plans to accompany the move, but I'll ask school officials next time I get a chance.
