Is there any PTA/PTO's doing any programs that deals with the upcoming election? I would love some ideas. Thanks.

I have heard through the grapevine so to speak that our districts teachers union wants the PTO president (which is me) to talk to the parents about voting down the proposal for school vouchers. I have my own personal views concerning this issue and don't feel that a PTO meeting is the place to force my opinion or the districts opinion on anyone. I suppose if it were treated as an information only type way>>>where representatives from both sides were there to address and answer questions...that would be okay. Although I would have reservations about a PTO becoming politically involved in issues...you never know whom you might offend. Just my opinion.....

We are having a mock election. We have contacted our county voting office to get some registration forms and voting ballots that we are going to modify for our students.
We are going to set up election booths and on a day near to the actual election we will have our students vote. I think we are only including 2nd thru 4th. As they are working on elections for their academy projects.
It's been a long time ago, but I remember doing this in elementary school. It helps our children become more aware of the world around them. It also reinforces voting. Not enough people in the world use their voice (or their vote) to change things.

Just last month our PTO President gave a school district board member 15 minutes to talk to our parents about an upcoming bond issue that our school district needs to have passed. The issue with this is, we are a charter school and will not receive money from this bond so some parents were not to happy about the visitor. Others were intrested in what this bond issue will do for other schools etc. Our Pres. is VERY politicaly involved in our community so we have had to reminder her people are people
(she was very upset with me last year because I didn't know where to vote and didn't have a car to go to the polls) Anyway, done right, a little information can go a long way but to tell someone how to vote is rude.
