PTA vs 501(c)3 PTT

9 Years, 5 Months ago

I'm a co-president this year of a PTT (Parents Teachers Together) of an Oregon Elementary (K-5) with approx. 400 students and basic bylaws. I need some information that I hope you can help me with. Why would we need to register as a 501(c)3 ? This has come up this year by some members that we should join the PTA or registering our PTT as a 501(c)3. We don't understand at which point is it necessary to do either or just stay as we are?? Does it have to do with the amount of funds you raise yearly or how you spend them??? Please Help...

No matter if you are a PTA or a PTT you should obtain a 501 C 3 status. This will enable you to have a tax free status, which for fundraisers is very important. You will not have to pay tax on items purchased for fundraising. Talk to a CPA.
