PTA Takeover

5 Years, 9 Months ago

Page: 1

This years board has invited the PTA District President to our last meeting and she instilled fear about our non-profit status and ability to continue on as a PTSO. The members were frightened and "bamboolzed" into voting to become a PTA. With a PTA there is a 60-90 day waiting period before a unit can disban. What is the case with PTSO?
If you have any info I'd appreciate it! Our next meeting is 5/17. PLEASE HELP!! I don't want to be a PTA again1

Oy Vey....

Hi Erin -

Good news is that your PTSO board's vote to become a PTSO is certainly re-considerable, if your Board wants to reconsider. The PTSO board's vote doesn't make you a PTA automatically -- that would take completing several PTA steps (and likely a vote of your membership, not just your board).

To your specific question -- you can disband your PTO in whatever manner is specified in your bylaws. There are typically no arcane, "let's make it seem really difficult to change" rules in PTO bylaws.

I guess first question is 'Why was she invited?'if you want to stay PTO.
Like Tim said, you can reconsider your votes. Don't let her bully (I guess this the new word being tossed around for everything) your group. You and your whole group need to decide what is the right fit for the group and you are the only ones who decide this. Good Luck! Either way it boils down to is each group is for the children.

The members were frightened and "bamboolzed" into voting to become a PTA. My, My, My, Frightened by the PTA!
"Bamboozled"?

If you are a well run PTSO then you have registered for 501(c)3 non-profit status.

Could it be that the PTA rep made some valid points, and that the board made an informed decission? Ultimatly it shouls be up to the entire membership to have and informed vote on PTA or PTO.

Remember the children first, before you get into the politics (and ego's) of O or A.
