Hop a thon(or something like it)

We hosted a Walk-a-thon in our daycare centre of 120 children and made almost $3000. Our prize was one donated gift certificate of $50. We did not expect to make that much at all. The walk-a-thon consisted of children walking off to a local park down a set course. They made their own costumes or themes and thought it was neat to get going. We are trying a Hop-A-Thon next, again we aren't expecting too much in regards to fundraising, but we were Very Surprised by the outcome of the Walk-a-thon!

Dear MomofTimmy,
I am a co-chair of an elementary school pto. Last year I ran a multi-level membership drive. Parents had a choice of three memberships to choose from. A Basic Membership was a $5.00 fee that has always been offered. A Gold Membership was $20.00 and you received an embroidered hat with the school name on it (the hats cost us $8.00) The Platinum Membership was $30.00 and you were able to buy an engraved brick that would be put into a Brick Walkway at the school. We got a great response and sold over 100 bricks. I bought the bricks through a local company (Spaulding Brick in Cranston, RI). There are things you absolutely need to be aware of before undertaking this project. 1. The cost of engraved bricks were $12.00 each. What I did not plan on were the hundreds of filler bricks at 50 cents each to complete the walkway. 2. I was lucky enough to have the city's help with installation. They not only installed it for us but also did a beautiful concrete border on each side. If they did not install it for us it would not have become a reality because of the cost for installation. You can not charge $30.00 a brick and pay for installation and make a profit. Luckily all worked out and we made approximately $1000.00. We had a ribbon cutting ceremony and dedicated bricks to our principal and superintendant. This year the response was alot less. We received orders for only 20 bricks. I do plan on continuing it as long as I am at the school because it really is a great project. I plan to get the local newspaper to do a story on it and offer bricks to alumni of the school as well. Alot of work is involved but it is well worth it. Good Luck.

Hi Mom of Timmy (love the screen name:

You may try calling a company called: Brick Graphics at 800-442-1942. They can help you out. Please be sure to tell them you got their name at PTOtoday.com. :)

Engraved bricks are a popular trend these days. Good luck. Let us know what you find out.

For our jog-a-thon we were able to solicit more the 2 dozen different gift certificates from local stores (Pap Gino's, McDonalds were two). Once we knew which students brought in the most, #1 could pick a gift certificate, then #2, etc.

As a sales person for a playground company, probably over half of my jobs are through the generous efforts of school PTO/PTA fundraising efforts. I see lots of cool things, but the two biggest bangs I have seen the last few years were the "buy-a-brick" program. I recall a school I helped in Upstate New York, where the student council voted to send a letter home to mom and dad... "in lieu of one christmas present, but a brick". The second biggest was a gas station donated a penny per gallon. Wow!
