Here's how I made a 4-ft. tall thermometer for a bulletin board, but you can make it whatever size you need: I used a roll of white paper so I didn't have to piece it together. Use a yardstick & pencil to draw 2 parallel lines (mine were about eight inches apart; but whatever looks right to you). For the bulb of the thermometer, trace around a smooth-edged plate (like a salad or luncheon plate) at one end of your two lines. To round off the top of the thermometer, line up a saucer at the other end of the two lines and trace a curved line to connect them. Use a black marker (like a Sharpie), the yardstick, and the plates to trace a black outline over your pencil tracing. Cut it out just outside the black outline. Use the thermometer shape to trace an identical shape out of red paper (our art teacher keeps huge rolls of various colors of construction paper, which I was able to use). You can then use sections of the red shape and add more as needed to indicate your earnings. I a strip of black cardstock laid across the stem of the thermometer to indicate the "degrees" or amount, with the actual amount printed in a large font on a piece of white cardstock to attach at the appropriate level. This really was easy to do and looked great! An extra pair of hands to hold things down (curling paper, yardsticks, the plates as you trace them) would probably be helpful if you're not used to doing things like this.
