Looking for an opinion please

10 Months, 2 Weeks ago

I have not been active in our school for a few years due to having a houseful of kids, my own and also foster kids. Being a foster parent required lots of my time and attention. Meetings, visits, dr. appts. and then just mentoring the kids prevented me from spending any time going to PTO meetings. School events that I attended were spent keeping an eye on the kids so I couldn't volunteer.

So my question is, now that we are no longer fp and I am not working outside of the home I feel that I have lots to contribute. I have had kids go through this school from K-12 and still have littles in elementary and more upcoming. These are all my own so we don't deal with meetings etc... anymore. I know lots of the teachers and even have a relative that teaches there, I even went to this school years ago.

So would they think I'm nuts if I go to the meeting and volunteer to be on the main board? I have lots of ideas and things to say. I just don't want to be shunned because of my previous lack of involvement. Do you think they wouldl understand? I really want to be involved and make a difference, Thanks:)

You definitely won't be shunned. PTO's always need volunteers.

However, the place to make your announcement and offer your help isn't at a board meeting. Secondly, nominations/elections for next year's PTO board positions are likely already a done deal so getting a board spot may not be possible. However, there will likely be loads of openings on various committees.

I suggest that you contact this year's PTO president (or find out at the school office who next year's President will be and contact him/her). Explain that your situation now is such that you can be more active in volunteering and ask what opportunities would be available with the PTO. He/she will love you for it! Enjoy!
