Free Hot Dogs

I am the PTSC President. Last night we had our meeting. I really need some guidance. I don't know if I am making a big deal out of this or not.

Here's the situation:
We are having an open house at the school in April. At our last meeting (beginning of March) we discussed selling cookies and soda at the open house. It was to be voted on at the meeting last night. Then we find out last night that the principal sent home a flyer with all students announcing that the PTSC would be giving away FREE hot dogs and soda at open house.

Did the principal have a right to do this? I was under the impression that something like this had to be voted on my the PTSC board. Am I wrong?

There is nothing I can do about it now since the flyers already were sent home. I plan on talking to the principal on Friday about it.

I have a whole board (6 members) that have never attended a PTSC meeting before and don't have any clue on the different procedures that should occur(voting on things before we actually send notifications out). Am I making a big deal out of this?

Judy, first all of the Principal should of communicated with you before ever sending out the flyer. This is one of my pet peeves is dull communication with the Principal. They need to understand that we are here to give assistance. Not in anyway is this a issue of power. I feel that if there's no communication between Principal and PTO then there is no marriage and it will fall apart and it will start at the foundation of parents being upset by what needs to be a firm one. Does the school plan to fund the hot-dogs and soda. If so then let the school do it. If not and your org is funding the project then my advice is your not making a big deal. They (Principal) need to take into consideration funds allocated for certain activities. After, the event I would sit down and speak with her about how this was handled. You can maybe ask for donations for the buns, franks. If funds are the problem. Yes, you do have a valid reason to be uptight about it. I know I would. Just take a deep breath and count to 10 and then go forth.
