Remembering 9/11

Is anyone planning a special tribute for 9/11 in their schools? We are in the NY area, so it is a very sensitive topic here, but we would like to do something to honor those lost in our community.

I had this same question about a week ago and this is what I have come up with -- First of all, we didn't want to scare the kids, but we felt like we should do something. I've arranged for the Air Force Recruiter, a Policeman, and a Fireman to come in and talk to the kids, just about their jobs and things in general, not really anything specific about 9/11. Also, in the morning, each child will receive a flag sticker to wear on their shirt for the day. And last -- Flight 93 crashed very close to my hometown, so we are going to have a Flight 93 Memorial Fund Drive the whole week of 9-8 to 9-13, we will have a container in each class, along with a picture of the makeshift memorial which is at the sight now. I will send home flyers about a week before to let parents know we are collecting money. The classroom whose jug WEIGHS the most at the end of the week will get an ice cream party sponsored by PTO. I've also found a local bank who is going to count the money for free. Good Luck!!!

We are going to have red, white and blue day with a moment of silence and each child will be given either a flag sticker or pencil (anyone know of a great place to get these)

A great place to get patriotic items, including flag stickers and pencils is OrientalTrading.com...Our family purchased the pencils as a gift to our school last year for the week following 9/11.

I addressed this same question just yesterday at our Exec meeting. We decided to not make too big of a deal about it, but to just have a "red, white, and blue day. Our district is having all schools say the Pledge at the same time on that day, followed by a moment of silence. You might want to check out your local teacher supply store for pencils and stuff...but I've seen patriotic pencils EVERYWHERE this year, including Wal-Mart!!

We spoke to our Principal yesterday on the subject. She is going to have something first thing when the kids get off the bus. I just recently received an email that states that everyone stop what they are doing at 12 Noon (noon in your time zone) and say the Pledge of Allegience. It is in the middle of lunches but I think I am going to try and get volunteers in each part of the school to help this get pulled off. I am hoping that the principal will say it over the intercom system in school. We did pencils and ribbons last year... I'd like to do something unique this year if anyone has ideas.

Thanks!
