I am the Election Judge this week (and the next) for our School Board elections and that is THE nicest thing I have heard all week! Okay, the ONLY nice thing I have heard......

We have a volunteer reception every year. The PTO funds it but the staff does the work. It's nice. We get a certificate (I've kept them all) and a plant. I wish they would quit with the plants because I always kill mine before the school year is over. Not that I am complaining but I would rather have a picture of flowers colored by a student that says thanks for helping or something. That would also be less money out of our budget. Can you tell I'm the treasurer?

I got a really special thank you note yesterday. My daughter's teacher gave handmade cards to the people who helped with talent show. Each card had a pastel drawing she had done(she's quite and artist!) and a poem she had written inside that related to the artwork. Then she had one of the students write a message on the inside. It's absolutely beautiful, one of a kind, and personal. That's the kind of thank you I treasure.

We had our luncheon yesterday and of course I had to do all the planning, setting up and cleaning up. The teachers brought in a side dish. Not even a Thank you from them for all we do. Oh well, I do it for the kids and not for them.

There are signs all over our school thanking volunteers. There is one big poster board that looks like most teachers have signed and included a little note. My son's teacher sent home a Thank You card and chocolate bar for helping with his class's computer lab. There is also a volunteer luncheon (well, not really a lunch but light hors d'oeurves). Anyway, it is nice to be recognized and appreciated.

One thing I don't like about our school is that the PTO and "volunteer" program are run separately. Those in the "volunteer" program are recognized by the luncheon and those with 100 hours or more are given some kind of certificate or something. But people who give their time for PTO stuff aren't recognized. I think this is a crock. I happen to do both and if both counted I would definitely be in the 100 hour range, but not all of my volunteer hours can be counted. I asked at the last PTO meeting why those hours aren't counted and the reason I was given was something about whether or not the hours you give are for educational purposes. So, I do the computer lab and Educate a Reader, so those hours can count. But the many hours I've put in as Secretary as well as chairing two major family events don't count because they're perceived as "fun", not "educational". Whatever!
