I like ratpakgirl's reply. If you wait until after the event, you can include bit of info about your event and how your group may be using the overall funds. This personalizes it for the donor and helps them feel good about helping out.
This is my first year doing this, however I plan on sending the thank you's after the event. This way I can also include how much money was raised with their help.
