Default How to volunteer when hours expected is more than I have

Susan posted this comment on the article, Is Your PTO a Clique. I'm reposting here as she's looking for help with a specific issue so it's more of a message board question:

I have a real problem with a committee at our school. They chair our biggest fund raiser and two of them are co-vp's of PTO. Next yr one will be pres. of PTO. Some of us want to help and want to be worthy of responsibilities on this committee, but are told the committee won't mold to our schedules. They put in 30 hrs for the fund raiser and expect almost as much from me. I can't do it, but I want to give 15 hrs. I'm asked to consider if this is the wrong committee for me! What do I do?

Perhaps instead of defining your contribution by hours you can define it by what you plan to accomplish (i.e. I will do the decorations, or I will shop for the sodas and food requirements). Then maybe you can put your contributions into a different light -- and everyone can benefit.
