Default Dress Codes

Good Day! I am new here so forgive me if my inquiry is somewhat redundant. I am curious to know if there has been any new ideas or discussions with regard to modifying standard dress codes in public schools to prohibit the improper wear of slacks and jeans for boys. I can appreciate that each generation has its own fads, but the sagging of jeans to the extent undergarments are exposed is simply not acceptable to me. I believe it has been long overdue for the education system to take a stronger stance on this. In my opinion, the solution is not allow the student to wear longer shirts but to send a message to both students and parents as to what is considered appropriate attire for a learning environment. Any comments?

My school has that in place already. They send the dress code home every year with the other rules and regulations. If they don't dress properly then the parents are called to come and get them so they can go home and change. But this is a board decision and not a PTO one. Maybe if you get a group of parents and go befroe the school board then you can get it changed. Melissa

Is there a student handbook?? We give out a student handbook each year that has all the school rules on absences, dress code, how to act while in school and so on...

Our school's handbook states that either pants shall fit properly, or student shall have a belt on. If neither applies, then parent will be called to bring either proper fitting pants or a belt.

Actually, our school used to "loan" out belts, but they were never returned. Last year, the office started using twine like rope for belts. Inexpensive quick fix and VERY embarrassing to those who wore them. Really stopped the sagging pants problem. Can't you picture it? Kind of like Jethro from Beverly Hillbillies. Definately NOT COOL!! HA! Our problem is the parent who wears the sagging pants to pick up their kid from school.

Our school has a volunteer handbook that adresses the question of what parentrs are expected to wear as they model correct behavior for our students.

IMO, this is an issue for the cities' School Committee. You may want to inquire with your school's Principal and/or Ward School Committee member.

Like many other schools, ours began prohibiting the baggy pants shortly after the trend started. The district dress code is given out at registration as part of the student handbook. No baggy pants, no spaghetti strap, low-cut tops(the girls have their clothing issues too.).

As one of the above posters mentioned, the schools will require that different clothing be brought by parents and they have some lovely sweatpants and a Hello Kitty belt that can be used at the middleschool! That belt gets returned!

Ours has similar restrictions. This video was shown to parents at one point as an example. YouTube - Kids with Guns

As an aside, just how long is this stupid "baggy pants" trend going to last??? It's been going on now for at least 10 years to my recollection.

Our public school district started enforcing a uniform policy for K-8 and a dress code policy for 9-12 for 4 years now. Parents have been on the uniform/dress code committee from the beginning and each year we continue to meet to adjust the policies if needed. The parents were given surveys at Parent/Teacher Conferences and asked about their thoughts and feelings on the subject; from that it gave the district the go ahead since the majority of those that filled the survey out approved of a uniform/dress code policy.
I would suggest checking out our district website at [U]Toledo Public Schools - Home[U]and it will list the policy that is set in place. While there will always be those that do not like the policy and of course students who will test the dress code, for the most part it has helped with behavior issues across the board.
