Default Personally Decorated Tiles to Beautify Schoolgrounds

Help - We are looking to possibly do a project where the students would paint tiles and then we would place these on planter boxes to help brighten up the school grounds. My questions would be what type of tiles and what kind of paint or glaze (if we could fire the tiles in a kiln) would we need.

If you have done something like this please share your ideas.

you could also paint a brick- no firing required.. read about it on www.fundraising.com . Their " kits" are a little pricey.. i think you do it all by yourself.. any paint store and brick mason could help you with these basic questions!

We used regular tiles from a tile shop and then the art teacher had the tile paint and the glaze was applied after all the tiles were painted prior to their firing.

It was a lot of work and we made about 400 bucks. We also sold small boxes and pot holder type squares you can use to put them in for an additional cost.

I've got to say though...there are easier ways to raise 400 dollars...d

Yes.

I'd check with local tilers or art shop to see if they have a family event night... I've seen some pretty cool ones done here in SoCal but non of the PTA/O's made much money on it.. Its more a family, school beautification- get toghethr project than a fundraiser.

might want to check the source of the tiles and the paint too....dont just buy whats cheapest if the kids are going to be handling them.

see cdc center for disease control or cspi center for the science in public interest (not sure of sp) websites for infos on lead in tiles from some overseas vendors. same with paints.

I haven't looked to see if these are ok to use for outside, but our school is considering using Square 1 Art . This company takes something you create on paper and can put it on tiles or mugs or just about anything. The nice thing about this is you can use it for some kind of decoration at your school and also as a fundraiser by selling the same artwork on something.
