Does anyone have a section in their current By-Laws that allows for co-officers? We are hoping to modify our current By-Laws to allow for 2-3 Co-Presidents and the possibility of eliminating the VP position in the case of Co-Presidents.

I have looked over the file exchange and found very little with regards to Co-Presidents in the By-Laws section.

The bylaws at our elementary simply list the board positions with the statement that any of the offices my be co-chaired. We aren't any more specific on how those co-positions will be handled.

Just out of curiosity, why is your group considering having 2-3 Co-Presidents?

Thanks. We currently have 2 Presidents (one a mom, one a dad), although they both need to be voted on. The mom was VP and had to assume the Pres. Role because our elected President had to vacate their office. The dad has expressed an interest in assisting the former VP and we're looking to add an additional person to the group to create a Leadership Team. Since the two of them have come into their positions after the organizational year had already started, we'll have to hold elections at the first meeting. But as it stands now, our By-Laws are not very inclusive and have no provision for co-officers. Thanks for the info from yours.

Oh and if it helps any, both Co-Presidents are employed full-time outside the home. We'd like to find one Co-President that isn't. Though we don't believe it's necessary to be home full time to make it work. One of the Co-Pres' (the dad) may take the VP position so we don't have to modify the By-Laws any further than necessary.

Sounds like these potential "co" officers have it all worked out, so they know what they are getting into. With so many parents working outside the home, it's my opinion that parent groups need to do whatever they can to help open up involvment opportunities for as many parents as possible. If that means co-officers or co-chairs then by all means do it. As a working mom who has served on the board of my children's school parent groups(3 years as Pres), the boards I worked with took a good look at all of our positions and figured out ways to split them up into smaller portions if possible and we encouraged people to find a buddy and co-chair. It brings in more people and no one feels overwhelmed.

Our by-laws say
2 co-pres, one vp
OR
pres, 2 co-VPs

Personally, I think having a single president means you have a definite "the buck stops here" person for tough decisions.
