Students at the preK-8 Academy at Ocean Reef in Key Largo, Fla., celebrate birthdays in a special way: Instead of gifts, they ask each party guest to bring a $5 donation, which the kids then deliver personally to their selected charity. The PTO prints a personalized certificate for students who participate and also engraves their names on a “Birthday Club” plaque hanging in the school lobby.
