Can you tell me what you think about school denying recess to children as punishment. This is happening daily at my sons school. Even kindergartners are denied recess for “talking”. The whole class!

I think it’s perfectly fine for children to lose recess as punishments. I will say, though, I do not agree when it’s only a certain one or two kids talking and the whole class gets punished, but it does happen.

I disagree with taking away recess and group punichement. I think that group punishment it just a lazy way of discipline. It is making the other children discipline the out of line child rather than the teacher. On the recesss issue, many times those that act out need recess more than anyone else. Our school district does not allow teachers taking away recess due to childhood obesity concerns. I personally would not stand for either.

Rhode Island does not allow that as a punishment based on state policy for health and wellness.

If the child needs a punishment why not. Childhood obesity concerns give me a break
I personally am very very irritated with kids who are disruptive and the parents don’t care. My kid is at school to learn and if yours is disruptive it is not fair to my kid.

I don’t agree because there are kids that need to blow off steam outside, so they don’t do it inside. My son has Sensory Integration issues and literally needs to run around to be able to focus. His OT actually suggested moving recess in front of a class where kids need to sit still and attend. The result is that ALL the kids in the class are doing better! There are more creative, caring and constructive ways to discipline. Skipping recess isn’t at the top of my list. Recess also gives the teachers a break, allowing them to prepare for the afternoon.

At our school recess can be taken away, but alot of times it is taken away and the child is given an activity. Like playground cleanup, or sweeping rocks (that come out of the playground). There is a time and a place for mass punishment and if used with care can be a very effective tool.

This is a practice frequently used at my sons school, and I think its ineffective. My son who has had some talking problems with his new transition (new school) loses it often. It doesn’t even phase him, but I know he needs that time. The principal prides himself on a strict curriculum, so our kids have very little free time anyway. I think making them pick up on the playground or walk laps would be more effective.

It is proven that children perform better academically when they get their blood circulating within their brains so taking away extra recreation time may be doing more harm than good. Kids are not going to be perfect however when they misbehave there are other activities they can lose such as silent lunch, extra homework, missing out on a homeroom party, etc. Daily exercise is vital to kids doing well in school. Talk to the teacher and principal and see how you can help change this policy.

I think it would be beneficial to see what your district, county and state mandates are on recess. Some states do not allow for recess to be taken away. Have you gone to the PTO/PTA at your school to question the practice? It doesn’t sound like it is your child causing the loss of recess so you need to speak up loud and clear that your child is not to have recess used as a punishment. You have to be the advocate for your child.
