Helping Parent Leaders Make Schools Great

Parents criticizing schools. Is there a line?

November 7th, 2007 by tsullivan

Very interesting dust-up in Texas, where the school district is threatening a lawsuit against the owner of a local school watchdog siteDistrict has issues with posts by site owner and with posts by anonymous site visitors.  Trick is that law seems to be on the side of the critics.  We’re seeing this more and more (especially the anonymous hacks at teachers and principals) with the influx of local newspaper/town sites with comments alowed and the advent of sites like ratemyteacher.  Will be a good one to watch.  Interested to hear if this kind of web sniping is happening at all in your school or district.

I am a concerned parent in the Newton Co. School System. I have a child at every level of school. ( High,Mid, Elem) I am concerned w/ the crowding of one of our middle schools because another middle school(Clements) lacks discipline and a Principal. This lady has had this problem for the past 2 yrs ( that I know of- it could be longer). I believe there needs to be a change in leadership @ this school so it can be led to achieve higher standards and the students in that district can go back to their school.

Another problem is the integration of ratios in the county at the High School level. The High schools need redistricting so there are not so many students in one High School- at least until the next school is built. We as residents want what is BEST for our children. A crowded school w/ one-way halls is too much!! Especially when there is room to share elsewhere. We all know the problems.

Do you attend school board meetings? This is where change begins. Your school board members are elected to represent you and your children. With parents attending meetings and “pushing”, these board members should spend time in class rooms so they can experiance first hand what goes on in our schools. We are the tax payers and in a manner of speaking…the schools belong to us, we run them…they don’t run us!! Superintentants and other school officials DEPEND on parents NOT GETTING INVOLVED so they can do things their way and what works best according to their lives and schedules. Parents have to start seeing beyond the end of their noses and help each other to create change, if they can’t…things will stay the way they are! The power is in the people (numbers) standing together will work! Patients, time, and understanding creates a wonderful child…and family.
