Question: EIN # for a new group

We have just changed from PTA to PTO. I called the IRS to get a new EIN # but they said I could keep the PTA #. Is that a good idea or should I get a new EIN # for our PTO?

You should get a new EIN. Because of national and state PTA rules, you are actually closing down one group and starting up another. Creating a separate bank account with a separate EIN for your PTO will make that distinction more clear and reduce the chance of any dispute with your state PTA. The article Switching from PTA to PTO has some information you might find helpful. Good luck!

You should also be sure to let the PTA know you have disbanded if you have not done so already. A review of your bylaws will give you information on how to do that. Once the PTA in your state knows your unit is disbanded, whether you tell them or they find out on their own, they will report to the IRS that your EIN is no longer a valid PTA EIN and you will have to get a new one anyway.
