Question: Volunteer Entrence Fees to Events

We have a parent that contributes a large financial donation every year to the PA, but insists that volunteers should not have to pay entrence fees to events. We fear she will pull out her donations if do not agree with her on this issue. Is there an effective way of addressing and resolving this issue?

Advice from PTO Today

Hi pj - Much larger non-profits often face this issue with big donors expecting outsized input on all decisions. It's much lesson common for PTOs and PTAs where those large donations aren't typical. But it seems to me like the answer lies in your bylaws and, somewhat, your backbone. It sounds like a fair opinion she has. Not right or wrong, but certainly not crazy. Have you discussed it as an organization? Has it been proposed, discussed and voted on? Whether a parent gives big bucks or not, opinions should be valued and heard openly. If yes to the above, then you as leaders have to act with some confidence. A donation does not get you more votes and your bylaws -- and the opinions of all parents -- have to be respected. You can certainly work to make sure this donor knows her opinion was heard and is respected, but you have to respect the process too. If that means you lose the donation down the road, that's a risk you have to take. Tim

Perfect. We'd discussed this as Officers, but not yet with all PA members. The bi-laws do not address this issue, however we are also reviewing for the future. Your answer was right on target and very helpful. Kind regards, Peggy
