That's a nice idea and, I think, perfectly proper if your members want to sponsor a child or two for the trip. The cleanest way to do this is to let the principal (or faculty) decide who gets the sponsorship -- especially if you want to the sponsorship to go to children who otherwise would not be able to afford to go. The principal is in a better position to judge who needs the money and would get the most out of the trip. Even if you decide on an essay contest, let teachers do the judging. You don't want to be seen as playing favorites if, for instance, the child of a board member wins.
