Q&A

is the right of a private school to withhold parent info from PTA

I am the PTA President of a Private School here in Brooklyn New York, the new principal and Board of Trustees are not giving me the updated list of parents contacts,, is this against the law?

I'm sure the school sees this as a privacy issue -- they're concerned about sharing private information with the PTO when that sharing hasn't been authorized by parents. A good way around this for the future is to ask the school to place a checkbox on registration materials that says "please share my contact information with the PTA." For now I'd suggest sending home a form stating that the PTA is collecting email addresses (if that's the case) for it's newsletter and other important communications, and asking parents to send back their contact information.
