Question: misappropriation of funds

Our pta board president gave a committee a LARGE amount of money without a vote from the members. She was told she can not do it but did it anyways. It was for a good cause, but protocal was not followed. What can be done, Im afraid she will continue to do this

Hi Anonymous,
First step is to take a look at your group's bylaws and that document should outline what your next steps can be. For instance, most bylaws cover what type of financial expenditure requires a vote from the group and what doesn't. Often, we see this broken down by a dollar amount, say, anything over $150 or $200 would require a vote. Not sure what you mean by LARGE, but it sounds like it was more than a modest amount. So, you would be within your rights to raises the issue at your next meeting, ask for an explanation, and ask for your concerns to be reflected in the meeting minutes. I seems like you are suggesting in this particular instance the group may have voted this expense through (you refer to it as a good cause), but it still should not have been handled this way. You can also request that future expenditures be done according to the bylaws.

Hope this all works out well!
