Q&A

Impeaching a president

How do we go about removing the president? Our by-laws state we can remove an officer for no reason with 14 days notice to the vote. My question is how do we word such a thing in the flyer handed out? He is actually very difficult to work with and has told us he would rather see the pto go under than not get his way, in addition to breaking a few rules of the school. As I see it, the president is supposed to be a role model and follow ALL school rules.

Hi there,
Sounds like a lot is going on here. Is this a new president? As it is early in the school year, it is worth asking: Have you met and talked things through enough? You are certain that removal is the only option? If so, you need to put out notice about this vote, according to your bylaws. So, you would need to include wording in the flyer that says your group will be holding a vote on to replace the current PTO president.

Sorry it has come to this. Good luck and hope it goes up from here!

Hi!
To answer your questions, yes this is a new president. We have talked and talked and talked until blue in the face. The board has compromised and tried everything to make this work but he has stated it will be his way or no way and that does not work for us. Removal is truly the only option. Do you have any suggestions as to how we word the notice?

I'd get a parliamentarian to read your bylaws and make sure you do it right. It might be that your board can remove him or you might need the entire membership to vote. Do you need a majority vote or more than that? Must it be by ballot? If you make a mistake, you might be stuck with him or he could sue. A parli would be worth the cost.
