surprised parent by other parents involement in the schools pto

I just recently attended my first pto meeting at my daughters school and I was very surprised that there was only 6 people and the principal there I would love some advise on how this school can get the parents to join this schools pto.

This isn't unusual and it could be the result of a number of things. First, the parent group may be doing fine, but it just has a low turnout at meetings. Is the group active? Does it have events planned for this school year and a few fundraisers in the works? Are there parent volunteers running some committees, like a food drive or box tops? If these things are going on, I wouldn't be too concerned with meeting attendance. Yes, it would be great if many people attended (and we have some good articles on how to do that), but it isn't the primary measurement of a group. If, on the other hand, the group is nearly dormant and doesn't have much going on, then that is a very different issue. If that is the case, consider trying to get some sort of pot luck or other family get together on the calendar, perhaps even for the holidays, as a way to take an initial step in promoting parent involvement.
