Question: President now a District Employee

Our PTO President recently accepted a position with our school district's business office. She's done an awesome job over the last several years, however, we feel that it may be a conflict of interest with confidentiality issues. We have our own nonprofit tax id and aren't under the any district leadership. We'd love for her to remain part of our group but don't think acting president is appropriate. Thoughts?

Hi there,
First, check your bylaws to see if there are any restrictions on who can and can not be a PTO officer. If this isn't addressed in your bylaws, check with the district to make sure it doesn't have any policy about employees participating on PTOs. It sounds like this person is an awesome president, so look for ways to make it work. You may have situations that would create a conflict of interest (especially when voting is required) and it those cases, the president can take herself out of the discussion/vote.

Try to make it work! A good PTO president is hard to find!

Good luck!
