It's a little unusual that a group would plan a hiatus. It sounds like membership/interest may be winding down? What you do with the existing funds depends on your circumstances. If it is a case of lack of interest, you could spend down your fund on appropriate purchases for the school and leave a small balance. You probably wouldn't want to close the account just yet in the event your circumstances change.
