Question: HELP with "legitimizing" NJ PTO

I am desperately seeking help.. I recently took over as Treasurer for an Elementary School PTO. Back in 2012, the Treasurer at the time got us an EIN number, but then stopped there - no taxes were filed, and no other paperwork was done (I think they had previously been using the School's EIN, and the bank made them change to a new one). So now I'm trying to clean things up. I was able to incorporate.. we're registered as a nonprofit now in New Jersey.. I'm thinking of filing the 1023-EZ with an organization start date matching the date of incorportation (I hope I'm phrasing that correctly). Is that ok to do? Or will the 2012-2016 time frame be an issue - will the IRS come back and ask what was going on all the years that we had the EIN but didn't file? I appreciate any feedback!! This has been a stressful situation and I am amazed that this wasn't taken care of a long time ago.
