Insurance coverage for events staffed by non-volunteers

Our PTA wishes to sponsor an after-school STEM class/club, led by teachers. In order to get the teachers to do it, however, we need to offer them some financial compensation. Unfortunately, our insurance carrier is telling us that we are covered only at PTA activities run by volunteers. Because the teachers would be paid, we would not be covered. Is this a common provision in PTA insurance? How hard would it be to get an extra rider extending coverage to our STEM class and other activities with paid leaders?

Hi,

This is pretty standard, if a person is being paid then they become a vendor and they should have their own insurance. We suggest that you always have a vendor list your parent group as the additional insured on their policy. Cheryl-PTO Today
