Do you have to have officers?

Can you please send me an example of the bylaws that you created with a counsil for leadership instead of the traditional executive committee ( president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, etc. ) thx!

We had a similar situation with our Junior High PTO, which has far less activity than elementary. Our plan was to simply run it with a "council", much like you've described your Board. At the last minute, someone agreed to be President. But I think it would have worked for what we needed - coming together as a group to decide and dividing up responsibilities as they came up.

Thank you so much!! You answered what I was needing. You gave me much to think about. We are a small town so everybody knows everybody. But I get what you are saying. We will always have an odd number on the board, but we will be very specific in our bi-laws. Again thanks so much.

Your by-laws can state whatever you wish them too and you can operate without "officers" and just state majority rules. Which is how it is anyhow 95% of the time. However, I know in my state our by-laws had to list a "governing" system for incorporation.

And while that all sounds like a simple uncomplicated way of handling things... what happens when the first conflict or emergency arises? Are you really going to have time to contact the 5 or 6 of you to take a vote on what to do? Plus, if you are using an even number what happens when it is a tie vote? Who calls the meetings? Who sets the agenda? Who communicates with the principal?

A leader doesn't have to have a title but without someone providing the coordination of the work/meetings/etc. I fear things will be lost in the cracks... and what happens when the 5 or 6 of you fall out of favor with each other?

Just a few possible items to consider.

I get what you are saying--so far I will be treasure as my name is on the acct. We had another parent to step up as acting secretary, but no one wants to be Pres or vice per say. So The board which is comprise of five of us so far, we are trying to get 2 teachers. We will make decision and vote on them as a board. As far as running things we have a coordinator that works with a room parent from each class to outsource volunteers. We also send out letters to ask parent about which events they would like to help with. I hope that makes sense. My crazy question is as long as we set up or bi-laws in this manner, we can do this? I would love to have officers but we live in a low income area and our school is mostly minorities and we do not get many volunteers for these types of commitments. Thanks for answering back though-I should have been more specific.

If no one wants to take an official position, how will your group effectively divvy up the responsibilities so there is continuity in how the tasks are completed? For example, would you really want a rotating door of parents sharing in the treasurer's responsibilities off and on through-out the year?
