Interesting question. Our board has term limits (2 years) and is considering removing them - simply because we don't have enough members stepping forward to be on the board. Therefore, we'd like to provide the opportunity for existing board members to run again after their 2 years. We feel that there is no downside to this since anyone can run against them to prevent them from taking office.
In my view, term limits are necessary if you have several people who want a position. With a term limit, you give more people the opportunity to serve. Unfortunately, we have the opposite problem....not enough people.
Our by-laws do not currently include a term limit for any of the board of directors. They do require that the full board be elected annually and that anyone can run for any of the positions at any time.
That being said the board is considering an if an amendment should be made to the by-laws (by the general membership) to include term limits.
