Helping teachers keep kids healthy

We are thinking of doing something like this for Christmas and teacher wish list. Wondering if other schools did this and what worked. In the past we put something in our newsletter but would like to do something more creative. We had an awful year last year where sicknesses are concerned. We had to close twice because so many kids were absent. Teachers would love it if we collected supplies for them to keep the germs out of the classrooms.

The majority of these items are all ready standard on our school's class supply list so most of our teachers start the year off with more supplies than they can store. Last 2 months of school or so the teachers may start asking their classes for the supplies again, if they don't have enough to get them through. Otherwise this is something that we currently aren't involved in.

In November we send out a list of supplies that teachers want to all families- teachers ask for these in lieu of gifts. Cleaning supplies, kleenex and hand santizer is always top on these list and one of the most popular things parents give-- they must hope these supplies will help keep the classrooms more germ free!

Our PTG did healthy classroom kits for our teachers for back to school. We sent out an email asking for donations of kleenex, anti-bacterial hand wipes, hand sanitizer, desk wipes, etc. a couple weeks before school started. We got a great response because we coordinated drop off with a school playground meet-up. We assembled the supplies in bins we bought at the dollar store. The teachers loved it. We'll be doing this again next year!

Does your PTO or PTA do any classroom supply drives for teachers either at the beginning of the school year or over the holidays? How do you organize this? What types of supplies do you ask parents to bring in?
