our by-laws state that any person working for the district may not be a check signer - but they can hold a position on the board-

If your PTO is part of the school, then I can see where it may be a conflict or at least frowned upon by the school district. But if the PTO is an independent organization, I don't see what the conflict is. Honestly, if I had a teacher volunteer to be any one of our officers, I would be thrilled. Maybe they would have to recuse themselves from voting on, say, the amount to put in the budget for teacher appreciation, or teacher mini-grants, but other than that I can't think of a real problem.

Thank you Marie, that makes me feel better. Our Principal did not agree that it was a conflict of interest and argued that we were not very welcoming by stating so.

I am the PTO President at my children's intermediate school, as well as a teacher within the district. The district's policy conceening money handling by employees who are on the board is a no touch. This is a conflict. I am not even secondary signer on the bank accounts.

I am looking for advice on whether it would a conflict of interest to have a district employee who works in the school as the PTO Treasurer. Even if by-laws may not specify, what is the popular opinion on whether that would be a good or bad choice? The teacher may not report to the Principal (preschool teacher) but is a district employee and works at the school. Office staff approached her regarding the Treasurer position as they knew it was an open position for next year that not many had expressed interest in. What does everyone think?
