OK, I'll add www.freecycle.org to that list. From there you can link to a group within your area. The objective is to keep things from landfills through giving them away. If you have something at your home no longer needed or wanted, you can send a post to your area group and it automatically is e-mailed to all members in your area. You reply if interested. People can post "wants" also and sometimes, that seems to be abused. I have gotten great items from these posts, including a free eyebrow wax  from a cosmetologist looking for the empty boxes and instructions of home hair coloring kits.

Do any of you have/are you aware of a Craig's List in your area? (Look at the list of town's on the right side of the webpage.)

It's sort of an online classified ads system and has a "free" category under the For Sale ads where people can post things they simply want to get rid of. It's pretty incredible what people will give away (stuff gets scooped up quickly).

Our swim team was scrounging supplies to build a 4th of July float earlier this month. That week, there were a couple people in our area listing leftover lumber and a paint store that was moving and giving away its excess stock to anyone who showed up during the stated hours.

I noticed this week someone was giving away some surplus craft supplies. If you have one for your area, it might be worth keeping an eye out for odds and ends or if you are collecting for a garage sale. There's also a 'wanted' section where you can list things you are seeking.
