Resistance to change from PTA to PTO

Resistance to change from PTA to PTO was created by rpabon
My name is Robin, and I was "nominated" to be president of our PTA (cuz no one else wanted the job... including me!) We agreed on co-presidenting with 2 teachers and myself (a parent). We have gotten such a great response of parent involvement and volunteers that I'm very excited to be part of this. I see that a PTO would serve our school MUCH BETTER than our past PTA, but no one wants to make the switch (even though the PTA has not served us well in the past).

One thing they bring up is the "liability" and we are "personally liable" (as officers) for anything we do that does not fall under the PTA guidelines. Any suggestions on what I can do? Do I have to step down as PTA co-pres and start a PTO? Can I do both? Do you get insurance as a PTO like PTA's do? What are we liable for? (It's getting to the point that if someone chokes at a bake sale, we're liable...)

I'd really like to do this, but my enthusiasm is starting to wane. Any help/tips/info would be greatly appreciated.
