Question about a parent owing money wanting to run for executive board

16 years 10 months ago #133294 by Serendipity
Well, personally I do not think it is right to crucify someone for bouncing a check. People make mistakes. If she is making good on what she owes I don't think it makes her unworthy of a board seat. I think there is more here than meets the eye. I think you are looking for a reason to not have her run and this is what you have to pin on her. Is it because all the members whose terms are up? I assume what your saying is she will take a seat away from one of them and this is an attempt to not let that happen.

I understand that being rich is not a criteria for being a board member. I just don't think it's right that she owes money to the PTO from a check she bounced. (this was a pre-paid fundraiser where you collected from people you sold to and then turned it in at that time)

According to your bylaws she is not in violation of anything. She is paying off a fundraising debt and not her membership fee. As long as she is paying off the debt I see no reason to try and stop her from running. Clearly if the woman had the money she would not be in this situation...being rich should not be a criteria for being a board member.

I was wondering what some of you think of this situation that my school is in right now. In our By-Laws it states that if any parent who wants to run for any position on the executive board is able to as long as they have paid their membership fee. The members of the board right now have run for 2 years straight and our By-Laws state that they are not able to do so if anyone else wants to do so. The problem that we have is that this parent wants to run but owes an outstanding debt to the PTO because of a fundraiser that we had (her check bounced) She has been gradually paying us but still has this debt. Our By-Laws have nothing in it in regaurds to this. I myself do not think that this is ok for her to try and run. I have not been able to find anything in the Roberts Rules. Any help on this would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance
