Recruiting new board members: what works for you?

I'm writing in response to the suggestion about setting up committees by grade level. I've been trying to do this a bit at our school this year and am having some success. When we have an event we are assigning times to volunteer to specific grade levels. It has been some what successful. The biggest challenge comes when you have a grade level that does not have a solid volunteer base to start with while some others do. Our 1st grade parents are super involved but by 4th grade not so much. Please post to let me know how it works at your school.

Same issue here, but our WHOLE board is not returning. Yikes, how can a brand new board even operate or want to sign on in that position. Several board members are leaving the school and will not be available to even mentor. I am Pres. and have a son that I was told has health issues that will prevent me from returning. This has been the biggest growth year for our PTA and we have done wonderful things for the school and the kids. I feel personally responsible for the future success of the PTA but cannot sacrifice my family. Any suggestions?

THE UPCOMING SCHOOL YEAR OLD BOARD MEMBERS ARE LEAVING BECAUSE OF WORK OR LACK PERSONAL TIME. WE ARE ASKING TEACHERS TO ENCOURAGE MOTHERS OR FATHERS WHO COME TO SCHOOL AND HELP OUT FOR PARTIES OR FIELD TRIPS TO RUN FOR A POSITION. I AM A BOARD MEMBER WHO WILL NOT BE RETURNING SO I WANT TO MAKE IT A SMOOTH TRANSITION FOR THE UPCOMING BOARD MEMBERS. SO ANY OTHER GOOD IDEAS THAT ANYONE POST WOULD BE HELPFUL.

I am having quite an issue with next years board...... I am the only returning member, and only have one other person interested in being a part of the board next year. The current board members are not at all interested in finding new members, they seem to act like "I'm not going to be here so I don't care" When ever I suggest ways to get people involved, it is shot down, and no one wants to help out or participate. I recently have had some health issues so I can not do everything myself. I am scared that next year will be a flop and right when I became Pres. I am not sure what to do, but if I don'156651t do something there will be no 2010/2011 board and no more money or fun at our school!

Thanks

It is me again. I am toying around with a new idea for next year. This is trying to get more involment and hopefully more board members. I started with the co-helpers and it did not work. My thought is that if you are a parent of a 3rd grader, most likely you know most of the 3rd grade parents. Over the years different classes, you know more of that grade level.
My thought this year is to set up grade level groups. Maybe 4-5 parents hopefully from different classes to help with little odds and ends. I thought that maybe we could have a grade level art show at the end of the year that the grade level committees head up. Of course PTA would be behind them with support and direction.

My goal is that once we get the committees, they will have to interact with PTA on some level throughout the year and get to know us then move them into higher positions as time goes on.
Please give me feedback.

This is such a difficult area for everyone. I have found in the past couple of years that people want to help but feel excluded from the "PTA" group. I have made several steps at making sure that I meet people and talk with them and let them know my name (not that I am a board member) and who I am. Then maybe another introduction let them know that I am with the PTA and helping the school and kids. If people see myself and other board members interacting with parents they are more likely to help out. We need to let them know that we are just the same as them and that we have the same problems they do. That is just my two cents.
