“We have a fire station very near our school. There are a few paid firefighters as well as a crew of volunteers. They have agreed to provide a firefighter to read with a kindergarten, 1st, or 2nd grade student who needs a little extra help for an hour a week. One hour a week can allow three students to get 20 minutes of help with someone who is a strong role model....Our firefighters, who are often young people with no family in our community, are incorporated into the community.”
