Q&A

Obtaining a new EIN

We have recently dissolved our PTA and I am the treasurer for the PTO. I attempted to complete the EIN application on line. However, I am not sure whose information to put when it asks about Tax payer information. I called the number and the person I spoke with said he would need something from the state saying the PTO was approved before we could get a new EIN. I tried, unsuccessfully, to explain to him the PTO is not affiliated with the state PTA. I need help, advice, on what to do next.

On Form SS-4, we strongly recommend that you use your school address and a school phone number as your main points of contact. Because PTO leaders change so frequently, your group could be at risk of missing important mailings or messages if personal contact information is used on your form.

Try filling out the form (SS-4) again. The IRS requires you to put in the name and social security number of a "responsible party." Our understanding is that this is meant to prevent people from setting up dummy corporations and in no way makes you responsible for your parent group. Also, we called the IRS about your situation and the rep we spoke with told us that the school name and EIN can be used as the responsible party -- if the school agrees, of course. Good luck, and please let us know how it goes.

We have tried to fill out the (SS-4) application. However, our school and school board will not let us put them down as the responsible party. Do you have another suggestion?
