Q&A

Can family members be President and Vice President?

I'm a little concerned because at our first PTO meeting this year a mother and grandmother volunteered to be President and Vice President. I couldn't find anything in the bylaws that suggests if this is okay or not. Do any of you have any experience with this?

If there's no mention in the bylaws, then, it's ok to do. I understand you being a little concerned -- it seems like there could be problems with this setup. But, the emphasis is on "could.'' If mother and daughter make an effort set aside their family relationship when working on PTO business, all should be well.

Keep in touch,

Are they both signers on the bank account? For the protection of your organization, you should require two signatures on checks with only one family member as a signer, not both. The second signers should be a non related board member. Also, a third party board member (not related) should review the monthly bank statements. Just my 2 cents.
