Brady Elementary School Family Reading Night

Our school held our annual Family Reading Night on March 18. We followed a balloon theme with the motto "Up, Up, Up" as we have been focusing on positive behaviors and good choices throughout the school year. We decorated with balloons, and had a balloon cookie display on our refreshment table. the night also included a make-your-own book craft, a student play, a book walk (like a cake walk, but students won books and instead of walking on numbers they walked on book covers that were laminated and taped to the floor), used book swap, guest readers and a casual reading corner. Our school only has 176 students, and we gave out 150 welcome bags (every student received a free book, literacy materials and some other small giveaways), so we feel the evening was a huge success. Re:Reading Night planning, promotion & logististics
For ours, we were set for December 16th, today - but the snow has begun! So we are moving it to next year, during . Like most of our events - this is a contest with the students to see who can get the most parents to attend - we want and need our parents to be present! We have 2 confirmed guest readers, and our model will include several smaller audiences. In this model, we have a general opening, and then our audience breaks out into smaller groups that rotate to the guest readers and the activities. Our estimated time slot is ninety minutes, and this is perfect for a Family Reading Night. If we need extra time, we can stretch it to two hours. Any longer will keep families out too late, especially on a school night. We will need to use the auditorium for a book swap to help parents and students clear out older/gently used books, to make space for new ones over the holiday. Room 1 – PS-K Room 2 - 1-3 Room 3 – 4 and 5 Room 4 – 6 - 8 We will also have fun events for our student readers to participate in: JUMPING FOR POETRY CHARADES BY THE BOOK

We had Edible Reading in our December 2010 PTA Meeting. We had Christmas Books and Christmas Snacks for everyone. We had teacher and parent readers who read books and then snacks were passed out to the group. We had about 6-7 different tables for people to rotate. It was a really nice evening. Thanks for the idea.
